Road rash describes the abrasions and injuries to the skin that occur when a biker “lays down” his or her motorcycle and their body scrapes along the road. Road rash can be a particularly gruesome and painful motorcycle injury.

Road rash is separated into three different degrees depending on the severity and extent of the injury. First degree road rash is characterized by redness and minor abrasions of the skin. Second degree road rash is more serious and will involve abrasions that penetrate the skin and into the underlying muscle and fat. Third degree road rash is characterized by deep damage under the skin that necessitate immediate and serious medical attention and widespread area of damage. Such injuries will require skin grafting and other surgical procedures to properly treat.
